Medical Needs
Sleep Apnea: A medical condition where breathing repeatedly stops or becomes very shallow during sleep. It lowers oxygen levels, disrupts sleep, and is linked to serious health risks such as heart disease, stroke, and daytime fatigue.
Snoring: A sound caused by partial blockage of airflow in the nose or throat during sleep, leading to tissue vibrations. While it may seem harmless, snoring often causes major disturbances to both to the person snoring (poor sleep quality, dry mouth, tiredness) and to those around them (partners or family disturbed by the noise).
About 40% of men and 24% of women are habitual snorers, with prevalence increasing with age, especially after 40. Men snore more than women, though the gap narrows after menopause. Risk factors include obesity, alcohol, smoking, nasal congestion, and sleeping on the back. While often seen as a nuisance, snoring may signal sleep apnea, a serious disorder.
